Best new movies and TV series on Disney+ Australia: July 2023

Each month, new films and TV shows are added to Disney+‘s Australian library. Here’s Eliza Janssen’s recommendations for the titles most worth watching. Scroll down for the full list of everything arriving on the platform.

Top picks

The Bear: Season 2 (July 19)

It’s extremely unfair that audiences outside the US can only catch up with this critically acclaimed kitchen drama one month after its original release: international fans wanna look at yummy sandwiches, too! The good news is, uninitiated viewers now have a bit more time to discover young chef Carmy’s incredibly stressful first season as head chef of a humble Chicago restaurant, before seeing how he and his ambitious team take things to the next level in this latest batch of episodes. Get it while it’s hot (or, as per this frustrating release, re-heated in the Disney+ microwave).

Sharkfest

This monthlong celebration of all things big and bitey kicks off on July 7, with doco titles such as Bull Shark Bandits, Cannibal Sharks, and Shark Eat Shark illuminating one of the ocean’s most daunting predators (those last two seem like they might cover some of the same drama). July 19’s premiere of When Sharks Attack…And Why takes a welcome philosophical approach to the aquatic beasts, who have been antagonised ever since the release of Jaws despite merely doin’ their job atop the sea’s food pyramid for millions of years. I’m especially keen for Killer Shark vs. Killer Whale with the recent accounts of orcas attacking boats in the Strait of Gibraltar: a dark, real-world rebel uprising far more engaging than any of the antics going on in Disney’s bloating Star Wars series.

Justified: City Primeval: Season 1 (July 19)

Despite running for a hefty six seasons and starring an incredible cast of soon-to-be-famous faces, Justified seems doomed to remain an ever-underrated series. Perhaps this sequel, with Timothy Olyphant back in his stetson as unflappable US Marshal Raylan Givens, can recruit new fans. Having left Kentucky in his dust, Raylan is now doling out handcuffs and bullets to bad guys in Miami and Detroit, where a dangerous new foe crosses his path and threatens the tenuous balance of Raylan’s life as a lawman and a dad.
