Top picks

Black Beauty (27 November)

I missed out on having a ‘horse girl’ phase as a child. Maybe I just wasn’t outdoorsy enough. In any case, I’m still pretty excited about this sweeping new film adaptation of Anna Sewell’s timeless children’s novel Black Beauty. Born wild and free in the American West, intelligent horse Beauty is captured and brought to a stables, where she and a spirited teen girl form an unbreakable bond. Expect lots of sunset cantering, knowing horse glances and a terrific cast, featuring the voice of Kate Winslet and Mackenzie Foy as the central pair of legit horse girls. God I’m so jealous.

Inside Pixar episodes 1-5 (13 November)

For the past few decades, Pixar has basically been a font of world-class animation and beloved family storytelling intertwined into one big ol, painstakingly rendered, shamelessly tear-jerking final product. And I’m sure everyone in your family has their favourites; from the ever-growing mini universe of Toy Story, to Oscar winners like Finding Nemo, WALL-E and Ratatouille. Giving fans unprecedented access to the inner workings of the animation studio, Inside Pixar combines the personal and cinematic stories behind each movie, animator and moment that made your grown parents weep with unabashed melancholy and joy. It’s okay. Let it out.

Spread The Word (8 – 15 November)

What better way to celebrate NAIDOC week than to acquaint yourself with the native languages of our country? After all, it’s not like the English language can really cover each and every describable human situation; for that, you need to turn to one of the hundreds of local Indigenous languages, with rich words and meanings that are among the oldest on earth. For instance, ever destroyed your room while rummaging around and looking for a lost item? The Wiradjuri community would simply call that dirranyamgarra. Over this ten-part series, audiences of all ages can learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island language groups from all over Australia; a fun and easy opportunity to get closer to our local and national heritage.
