Oscars: Margot Robbie nominated for best actress
Australian Margot Robbie has been nominated for Best Lead Actress at this year’s Academy Awards.
The Queensland-born Robbie, a former Neighbours star, has been nominated for her performance in I, Tonya, a black comedy based on the career of disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding. The film was directed by another Australian, Craig Gillespie (though he was not nominated for Best Director).
Other Australians nominated for this year’s ceremony are editor Lee Smith (for Dunkirk) and Derin Seale and Josh Lawson. Seale and Lawson were nominated for their live-action short film, The Eleven O’Clock.
Mexican director Guillermo del Toro’s fishy romance The Shape of Water leads the nominations, with 13 noms including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Editing and Best Leading Actress. In his review, Flicks critic Luke Buckmaster described the film as “a richly shot romantic period drama” and “a genuine, poker-faced tale of interspecies attraction.”
Other leading films including Christopher Nolan’s war pic Dunkirk, which received eight nominations, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which received seven.
The films contending for Best Picture are: The 90th annual Academy Awards voters put forward nine best picture nominees: The Shape of Water; Lady Bird; Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri; Get Out; The Post; Dunkirk; Call Me By Your Name and Phantom Thread.
