11 of the best romantic movies on Amazon Prime Video Australia

No matter what kind of romance you like, Prime Video has got you covered—from cheesy holiday fluff to angsty, devastating period pieces and a whole bunch of love stories in between. Here are the best romance movies to be found on the platform…

Becoming Jane (2007)

Watch on Prime Video

There have been many adaptations of Jane Austen’s work over the years, but very few movies focused on the woman herself. This one sees Anne Hathaway play Austen, with James McAvoy as her love interest Thomas Langlois Lefroy. It’s more fiction than fact, but historical accuracy isn’t what you come to this kind of movie for.

Cruel Intentions (1999)

Watch on Prime Video

The romance in Cruel Intentions is toxic, but addictive, especially if you watched it for the first time as a teen and it’s all wrapped up in nostalgia. Starring the cream of the white, blonde, 90s teen star crop (although Sarah Michelle Gellar goes brunette here), the horny high school update of Dangerous Liaisons is angst-filled and iconic.

Dating the Enemy (1996)

Watch on Prime Video

An extremely underrated Australian rom-com starring Claudia Karvan and Guy Pearce as a couple who have recently broken up and who wake up to find themselves in each other’s bodies. It’s funny and ridiculous, while also being rather sweet, as the pair learn and grow to understand one another more as they quite literally walk in each other’s shoes.

First Daughter (2004)

Watch on Prime Video

First Daughter stars Katie Holmes as the daughter of the president of the United States who just wants to go to college and live a normal life—and who of course falls for a regular student (Marc Blucas). It has to be said that First Daughter is not a particularly good movie, but it sure is fun, and offers a great nostalgic escape.

His Girl Friday (1940)

Watch on Prime Video

Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell star as an editor and journalist who were formerly married and who reconnect while investigating a big story involving a murderer. Known for its fast, snappy dialogue and screwball comedy, His Girl Friday is one of the most significant classic rom-coms and a must-watch for any romance fan.  .

Mamma Mia! (2008)

Watch on Prime Video

Mamma Mia! is as over-the-top, absurd, colourful, and fun as a movie based on a musical based on the catalogue of ABBA should be. With an incredible cast featuring Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Christine Baranski, Julie Waters, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgard, and Dominic Cooper, it’s almost impossible to watch Mamma Mia! and not have a good time.

The Map of Tiny Perfect Things (2021)

Watch on Prime Video

This is kind of like Groundhog Day for angsty teens. Mark (Kyle Allen) thinks he’s the only one experiencing the same day over and over again, caught in a time loop that’s slowly driving him mad, until he runs into Margaret (Kathryn Newton), who is experiencing it too — and who, unlike Mark, isn’t particularly keen for it to end. It’s a bit heavy-handed in its messaging at times, but it’s also a sweet teen romance that explores deeper topics like grief.

The Mistletoe Promise (2016)

Watch on Prime Video

Prime Video is actually full of Hallmark and Lifetime TV romances that vary in quality, mostly on the very bad end of the scale. There are some gems in the mix, though, The Mistletoe Promise being one of them. The charisma of Jaime King and Luke Macfarlane in the leading roles certainly helps. They star as two lonely strangers who pretend to date to make their Christmas events more bearable.

Monte Carlo (2011)

Watch on Prime Video

Another cute, rather cheesy, mostly forgotten teen rom-com from 2011! This one stars Selena Gomez, Leighton Meester and Katie Cassidy as a group of friends who travel to Europe for a post-graduation trip. A case of mistaken identity propels them on a ridiculous, hijinksy adventure full of luxury suites and cute guys (what else?). It’s pure popcorn escapism.

Shrek (2001)

Watch on Prime Video

The Disney princess movies might get all the attention when it comes to animated romances, but Shrek actually offers a touching love story about the importance of finding a “true love” who sees and appreciates you exactly as you are. When it was released, it was a refreshing antidote to the standard cheesy Disney fare, and if over the years it’s been memed into ridiculousness, it’s still a very funny and endearing movie.

Sylvie’s Love (2020)

Watch on Prime Video

The kind of classic romance that’s about yearning and impossible choices and second chances; Sylvie’s Love is a sweet and tender movie starring Tessa Thompson, Nnamdi Asomugha, Eva Longoria, and Regé-Jean Page. Thompson plays the titular Sylvie, who dreams of being a TV producer and falls for an up-and-coming jazz player despite being engaged to another man. As the years pass, she must navigate her conflicting dreams and responsibilities in her search for true love—and herself.
