Three Pines: Season 1 (December 2)

Alfred Molina has brought a sense of scruffy empathy to just about every role he takes on, from a tragic Spider-Man villain to a coked-up spectacular side character in Boogie Nights. In this TV adaptation of Louise Penny’s novels, he’s Chief Inspector Armand Gamache: the kind of detective who notices those pesky details others tend to overlook.

The eight episodes of this hearty mystery series take place in a remote Quebec town, so Molina’s investigator will have to bounce between French and English to solve the central murder case—not to mention digging up ghosts from his own past, as telly cops tend to do.

You probably heard us raving about this inter-dimensional A24 joint while it was in cinemas, but now that it’s streaming, you can pause any frame for a peek into Michelle Yeoh’s psychedelic journey. With each watch, it turns out, the frenetic story seems more simple: at face value it’s about a dissatisfied laundry owner’s mid-life crisis, with each act getting her closer to properly appreciating her angsty daughter and meek husband. You just have to look past the sausage fingers, butt plugs, googley eyes and Jamie Lee Curtis-es to get there.
