Till (September 10)

The brutal true story of teenager Emmett Till’s murder was a turning point in US civil rights, exposing the sheer barbarism of white supremacy and a complicit justice system. This biographical drama, directed by Chinonye Chukwu, isn’t holding anything back in narrativising the 1955 events, nor the lifelong struggle of Emmett’s mother Mamie in making her son’s fate seen across an ignorant country. The film capably deals with a mother’s complex choice to turn her son’s death into a community scandal—she’d likely be very happy with Emmett’s story continuing to our big screens, and now to streaming services, even up to today.

The Continental: From the World of John Wick (September 22)

That classy assassin hotel from the John Wick movies gets a three-part origin series, in the same month that all of the franchise’s films are landing on Prime Video NZ. It reveals the backstory of the suave Winston character, back in the 1970s when Mel Gibson’s killer hotelier seems to be the mentor character’s own mentor. Under siege from New York’s dangerous criminal underworld, the budding safe space for nicely-dressed hitmen should have plenty of ammo to hit back with.

Gen V: Season 1 (September 29)

One of Amazon’s most exciting original series is still The Boys: a bleak comic-book satire of superpowered assholes behaving very badly. In between seasons of that very grown-up action-comedy, however, we’re getting a look into hormone-fuelled adolescents dealing with the same incredible abilities…with probably the same, blood-splattered results. Jaz Sinclair plays Marie Moreau, a rising star at America’s only college for Supes. With a target immediately put on her back by secret forces and jealous classmates, we’re sure she’ll make some terrible academic and romantic decisions that’ll be grim fun to watch.
