Top Picks: TV

Billy the Kid: Season 2 (October 16)

The tale of the American West and the infamous gunslinging outlaw Billy the Kid continues in season two. Tensions are rising between Billy (Tom Blyth) and corrupt powers of the Santa Fe Ring, in a conflict which will result in the bloody Lincoln County War. After shows like Westworld and Yellowstone’s many spin-offs, cowboys and “yeehaw”s offer an escapist intrigue of open pastures, life-or-death drama, and the chance to play the hero. And also horses. The horses are good, too.

Ghosts: Season 4 (October 17)

This charming BBC comedy combines history with modern life as an eclectic assortment of ghosts who have died over the course of centuries are bound to the site of their death—now a crumbling estate, which a modern couple wish to turn into a bed and breakfast. Chaos ensues as the living and dead try to coexist and keep their home afloat. It’s cosy and delightful!

Wolf Like Me: Season 2 (October 19)

Josh Gad, who is best known for his roles as Olaf in Frozen and LeFou in Beauty and the Beast, does not often get the leading role treatment, least of all as a love interest. Goofier nature set aside, his earnest charm is a compelling feature of this South Australia-set dramedy series. Australia’s Isla Fisher likewise gets to exercise her acting chops in a series that has unexpected twists.

Top Picks: Movies + Specials

Once Upon a Time in America (October 10)

The final film directed by Sergio Leone, this American epic stars Robert DeNiro as Noodles, a former gangster from the Prohibition-era and his return to New York after a period of exile. Although not talked about as much as The Godfather, the sweeping narrative from childhood to death is as much about greed, power and violence as it is friendship and what constitutes a family. Also starring James Woods and featuring Joe Pesci, with a score by Leone’s long-time collaborator Ennio Morricone, this is classed as one of the top gangster films of all time.

All the Beauty and the Bloodshed (October 15)

Documentarian Laura Poitras (Citizenfour) examines the life of artist and activist Nan Goldin, and her incendiary campaign against the Sackler family for their role in the opioid crisis. Goldin’s fight comes from a personal place, due to her own addiction to OxyContin. As she specifically targets art museums and institutions such as The Met and the Louvre in having accountability for their collaborations with the Sackler family as major arts donors, building tension and passion make this a must-see documentary.

Crawl (October 21)

Florida is a mythical place. Okay, not really, but it makes for the perfect setting in this single-location horror, as a young woman is trapped in her flooding house during a hurricane, only to find that lurking in the water are deadly alligators. As she fights for her life against jaws capable of tearing her to shreds, the film is gleeful spectacle, reminiscent of 2000s B-movie thrillers. Add it to your list of Halloween viewing for a fun time!
