Time: Season 2 (December 5)
Created by Jimmy McGovern, this prison drama returns with a knockout, three-part structure: season 2 is three, hour-long episodes, each one skipping months ahead in the incarceration of three strong-willed, complex prisoners. They’re Tamara Lawrance, Jodie Whittaker, and Bella Ramsey, each playing women who gradually find a sense of community and inner strength in one another—even when the system tries its hardest to keep them down. Season one was a success, but with such a trio of dramatic talent at its core, season two looks like even more of a triumph.
Strife (December 6)
Nobody does flustered like Asher Keddie: nobody. We’re stoked to see the Aussie actress leading yet another show about a time-poor, opinionated, loveable mess of a woman—this time, the editor of a newly-launched women’s website. The BINGE original series is based on the memoirs of controversial media magnate Mia Freedman, but with a producer from Big Little Lies guiding the new show, it’s likely to careen off into dramatised, wild directions.
The Last Year of Television (December 28)
It’s 2023: a new generation of TV audiences have cut the network TV umbilical cord and pranced, unmoored, into the world of streaming entertainment. That’s why Mitch McTaggart’s snarky annual specials, covering the weird, daggy, and unsettling stuff that happens on TV each year, are so vital nowadays. This next instalment should be another naughty autopsy of Australia’s bizarre screen culture. Gosh I hope they don’t spoil who won The Masked Singer for me.

Reality (December 9)
Based on a stage play that was itself adapted directly from fascinating government transcripts, this absorbing drama reveals the truth behind the longest ever prison sentence for leaking classified intelligence documents. The woman behind it was named, improbably enough, Reality Winner, and here she’s played by TV star Sydney Sweeney, in an impressively unvarnished role. On the hook for releasing shocking information about Russia’s interference in the 2016 US Presidential election, Sweeney’s whistleblower must defend her actions—keeping us viewers on tenterhooks as begin to see her apparent crime from a new angle.
Fast X (December 23)
I reckon this might be the ideal film to chuck on in the background while your loved ones get a big, indulgent meal ready this holiday season: it’s all about Dom and his “family”, of course. It’s long, stars Jason Momoa having a flamboyant good time, and is broken up by a big, bombastic action sequence every 20 minutes or so. Do we hope that the (allegedly) ultimate Fast film can top its lazy storytelling and wooden acting? Sure, we’ll always have faith in Toretto ‘n’ Co. For now, Fast X is a neat Christmas-time diversion.
The Royal Hotel (Coming Soon)
From the director of The Assistant comes another tense, feminist slow-burn thriller, again starring Julia Garner as an un-empowered woman in the wrong place at the wrong time. Garner and Jessica Henwick play American backpackers partying it up around rural Australia…until their money dries up, and they’re forced to take up live-in jobs in an outback mining town. Hugo Weaving plays a bar owner whose riotous welcome to the girls soon devolves into something more sinister: Wake in Fright for 2023, anyone?
