The Idol (June 5)
Right now as I’m writing this, Euphoria creator Sam Levinson’s new show is getting shockingly bad reviews at Cannes: after months of negative buzz surrounding its tumultuous production, I can’t wait to see for myself whether the sordid showbiz tale is worth all the fuss. R&B star The Weeknd has always had a distinctly cinematic sensibility in his tunes and music videos, and here he plays a music industry svengali who takes a fragile young talent (Lily Rose Depp) under his wing. This is a show everyone will be talking about, for better or worse (check out its free-falling Rotten Tomatoes score).
The Righteous Gemstones: Season 3 (June 19)
Often described as hillbilly Succession, HBO’s other show about a trio of spoiled siblings gunning for control over their dad’s corrupt empire is finally headed back to our screens. It took a while for season one to convince me, but since then the characters have just evolved into nuttier, realer, more hysterical versions of themselves. They’re the revoltingly wealthy offspring of a mega-church pastor played by GOAT John Goodman, and season two saw them lie, kill and steal their way to owning a Jesus-themed family resort. New episodes bless us with televangelist rivals, Judy driving a monster truck, and plenty of glorious Uncle Baby Billy (Walton Goggins) action.
And Just Like That…: Season 2 (June 22)
The first season of this Sex and the City sequel landed somewhere between the vibrant messiness of the original show and the utter glam chaos of the two films that came after: it was highly implausible and sometimes frustrating, sure, but also deeply entertaining. Still with no Samantha in sight, Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte are trying to find perfect balance in their extremely moneyed Manhattan lives—and for Carrie, it’s hinted that a lover from her past will show up again to sweep her off her Manolo Blahniks. When this show is out of touch, at least it does it with ludicrous, loveable style.

Being John Malkovich (June 1)
This is my favourite kind of movie: a surreal, existential story that pushes its bizarre high-concept into unexpected places. It’s all so very Charlie Kaufman, with John Cusack as a pathetic puppeteer who stumbles upon a portal that allows the entrant to live inside movie star Malkovich’s head for a while. Because it’s a grubby, cynical movie, Cusack of course begins charging randoms for the experience, and messes with his marriage and identity. Malkovich describes being “half intrigued and half horrified” at reading the super postmodern script for the first time, but what we get from it is an authentically tripped-out and brave performance.
Smile (June 13)
This CGI-laden horror film from last year won’t turn your frown upside down—rather, its tale of a viral, grinning demonic entity will twist any cheery expression into gut-deep feelings of dread. Sosie Bacon stars as a therapist trying to understand and escape contagious visions of smiling, self-harming ghouls in Parker Finn’s surprisingly taut and well-directed debut. Just look at that image from the film’s traumatising trailer: hnnng. Hard to forget once it’s flashed its pearly-whites at you.
John Early: Now More Than Ever (June 19)
This is a comedy special rather than a movie, but hell, I’m including it here. I’m firmly convinced that John Early is one of the funniest people on the planet, stealing scenes as a hilariously amoral New York hipster in Search Party and soaring to new heights of ridiculousness whenever he collaborates with bestie Kate Berlant. His first recorded comedy special promises to combine his pass-agg millennial angst stand-up with a rock biopic vibe, as Early performs Britney and Neil Young hits with a fake band propping him up.
