Top Picks: TV

Our Flag Means Death: Season 2 (October 5)

Useless wannabe pirate Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) found a little more than he bargained for on the high seas back in season one of this celebrated pirate comedy. He had a run in with the infamous Blackbeard (show creator Taika Waititi)…and they fell in love. Yep, no queerbaiting here, and swashbuckling fans will be keen to tune right back into the new couple’s hilarrrrious 18th century shenanigans, especially with season two’s generous triple-episode premiere. Let’s pray that Bonnet’s motley crew don’t mutiny against him, just because he has a new, murderous bf.

Krapopolis: Season 1 (October 16)

An epic voice cast of British comics populate Olympus—or at least some quirky analogue of it—in this new animated series from Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon. We’re talking Matt Berry, Richard Ayoade, and Ted Lasso standout Hannah Waddingham. Can Harmon bring the same mind-boggling, joke-a-minute ideas of his best-loved series to this new venture, now set in Ancient Greece rather than a googly, noodle-limbed vision of the future? Yeah, we’re pretty sure he can.

Top Picks: Movies

The Fabelmans (October 5)

Instead of writing some stuffy old memoir, Steven Spielberg gave us this loosely fictionalised family therapy sesh: his most personal movie yet, released in the director’s mid-70s. Michelle Williams and Paul Dano play ‘Sammy Fabelman’s parents with bruising sensitivity. “It’s the artists versus the scientists in this family”, Williams’ free-spirited matriarch explains to us, and Spielberg is still seemingly caught in that binary to this day, directing his own childhood with both warmth and a detached, analytic eye.

Pearl (October 7)

She’s a STARRRR!! Mia Goth gave everything to this Ti West horror prequel, following up X with the melodramatic backstory of its wizened villain. Back in 1918 Texas (actually New Zealand, the film’s shooting location during COVID restrictions), unhinged farm girl Pearl has dreams of the big screen…and she won’t let anyone, be they lover, friend, or well-meaning stranger, get between her and stardom. The film’s final shot is one for the ages, lingering on Goth’s tearful, richtus grin as the credits cruelly roll.

The Pope’s Exorcist (October 28)

I saw this religious horror B-movie on the same day as Super Mario Bros.: two entertaining films, both about as Italian as takeaway spag bol from a fish and chip shop. Russell Crowe gives his Father Gabriel Amorth a full-bodied, mama mia accent, however, in this scarefest based veeeery loosely on a real Vatican legend. If you can’t make it out the cinema to check out the new Exorcist movie this Halloween, watching Rusty battle demons from the comfort of your couch could be a good alternative.
