Reservation Dogs: Season 3 (August 4)
Fortunately we get a third season of this fresh, funny Indigenous coming-of-age comedy! Unfortunately it’ll be the last one, farewelling our misbehaving rez dogs with a final flash of heartwarming moments and humour. Way back when Luke Buckmaster reviewed season one, he praised the FX series for having “pep and jive to spare. Its cheeky sense of humour imbues its slice-of-life naturalism with sass…it also includes such flourishes as breaks in realism that take you by surprise.”
Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty: Season 2 (August 7)
Blending drama, comedy, and sporting history, this well-reviewed HBO series is back to chronicle LA’s beloved Lakers right up to the 1984 finals—and the killer rematch between team star Magic Johnson and his rival Larry Bird. James Nokise had a ball watching season one last year: “There are paralleled family dynamics, multi-million dollar egos, and the fate of a city’s fans at stake. Throw in a healthy amount of Ted Lasso-ish male archetype deconstruction, and the show strikes a captivating chord.”
Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake: Season 1 (August 31)
Come on, grab your friends: let’s go to very distant, gender-swapped lands. Adventure Time may be over, but this adorable spin-off, starring the female versions of Finn and Jake (now a cat!), promises to deliver the same squishy landscapes, quirky characters, and probably a few addictively catchy tunes as well. Animation fans, be they young or just kids at heart, will be glad to have Pendleton Ward’s noodley-armed characters back on their screens.

Corsage (August 1)
Directed by Marie Kreutzer, this unconventional biopic of Empress Elisabeth of Austria stars Vicky Krieps as a monarch struggling with the irrepressible creeping of time. Is she merely vain, worrying about her waist-size and age? Or is her situation, however flouncy and aristocratic, darkly relatable to most of us? Lillian Crawford loved the lavish period piece in her review from last year: “It is far more engaging and enjoyable to watch an historical biopic which makes no pretence to authenticity, and Kreutzer is keen to signal her self-awareness through pop-aesthetic winks to camera.”
M3GAN (August 12)
Meet your new bestie: she can do TikTok dances, sing Sia’s “Titanium” as a beautiful bedtime lullaby, and sprint at your enemies on all fours before shoving them in front of a speeding truck! This instantly memed horror film from Blumhouse more than lived up to its hype, even if its PG-rating means the scares are never too unbearably intense or gory. Allison Williams is an all-timer terrible parent when she lets her newly-orphaned niece bond with the artificially intelligent doll, played by multiple talented child actors.
Aftersun (August 24)
Charlotte Wells’ accomplished debut feature is so acute and specific in its characterisation of a bittersweet father-daughter bond, and yet it’ll make just about any parent get all misty. It’s no wonder leading man Paul Mescal picked up an Oscars nod for his role as a depressed dad, holidaying with his daughter as she slowly realises just how existentially distant they are. The karaoke and dancefloor scenes perfectly hone in on the energy here: of how memories, nostalgia, longing can be as painful as they are precious.
