Best new movies and TV series on Netflix Australia: March 2023

Each month, loads of new films and TV shows are added to Netflix Australia‘s library. Critic Claire White presents her picks for titles worth watching. For the full list of everything arriving on the platform, scroll down. Also, check out Craig Mathieson’s top 50 movies on Netflix list.

Top Picks: TV

Next in Fashion: Season 2 (March 3)

I have fond memories of watching Tim Gunn and international supermodel Heidi Klum telling frazzled fashion designers with desperation in their eyes to “make it work” in Project Runway. Luckily, Next in Fashion, another design competition show, fills this void. While Queer Eye’s Tan France as host is less ruthless than Mr Gunn, the competition is no less fierce. And the outfits? Incredible. This season he is joined by Gigi Hadid as co-host, and a slew of guest appearances including Gigi’s sister Bella Hadid, and Donatella Versace herself.

Wellmania (March 29)

Australian comedian Celeste Barber stars in this Netflix original series as Liv, a TV presenter who needs to rethink her “live fast die young” lifestyle and dives into a search for wellness. Based on the non-fiction book by journalist Brigid Delaney, Wellmania is an exploration of the world of wellness culture and all the bizarre—and controversial—treatments that are out there. Hopefully this show will shine a light on how ridiculous and predatory wellness culture can be. But you know, in an upbeat and funny way.

Riverdale: Season 7 (March 30)

Oh, Riverdale. The neon-noir turned supernatural mind-meld teen drama is finally coming to an end. With the release of its final season, the best way to watch Riverdale is to be along for the ride. Whether it’s emulating Twin Peaks or The X-Files or featuring Chad Michael Murray as a cult leader with a rocket, the show is gleeful in its melodrama and doesn’t hold itself back on whatever wild idea it can come up with next. You will be missed!

Top Picks: Movies + Specials

Babyteeth (March 1)

When terminally ill teenager Milla (Eliza Scanlen) meets Moses (Toby Wallace), an older boy with a rat tail and a drug habit who nonetheless makes her laugh, her parents (Ben Mendelsohn and Essie Davis) reluctantly let him into their lives. With a truly excellent lead performance by Scanlen, Babyteeth is a deeply affecting and irreverent “girl with cancer” story without the usual sap or hospital scenes. Embracing the humour, mess and tragedy of young love, it put Australian director Shannon Murphy at the top of Directors to Watch lists, and for good reason.

Nope (March 9)

In Jordan Peele’s latest neo-western sci-fi horror film, Keke Palmer and Daniel Kaluuya star as siblings Emerald and OJ who try to protect their family’s horse ranch from an ominous cloud, while also trying to capture it with the help of surveillance cameras and an old documentary filmmaker. It’s about aliens and family, but also about obsession with spectacle and trauma and dangers of The Gaze. My favourite, Steven Yeun also appears, but Keke Palmer steals the show.

Elvis (March 21)

Speaking of spectacle—Aussie director Baz Luhrmann’s behemoth biographical ode to Elvis Presley is hitting streaming services. With a star-studded cast, Austin Butler’s performance as Elvis has been commended as one of the best of the past year with a slew of recognition and awards. A performance that so deeply embodies the heart and soul of Elvis, some argue the ghost of the soulful singer never left Butler (or at least that accent).
