Top picks

Uncle Frank (25 November)

This heartfelt road movie might have the most Character Actor-y cast of all time—at the very least, it certainly features a cast full of the best ‘Oh Yeah That Dude I Know Them From Something’ performers of our generation. Like Stephen Root, Steve Zahn, Margo Martindale and Judy Greer. But Uncle Frank is really about Sophia Lillis’ character Beth, and her closeted uncle (Paul Bettany), both of whom must travel from New York to the deep South to attend a funeral. Written and directed by Alan Ball, Uncle Frank is another sincere story of family, misery and grief, like Ball’s Six Feet Under and American Beauty.

Sequin In A Blue Room (27 November)

There’s something really heady and innovative about this Aussie queer drama, which was featured at both Toronto International Film Festival and Sydney International Film Festival. It stars newcomer Conor Leach as 16-year-old Sequin (yes that is his name), a boy venturing into the adult world of anonymous sex, dating apps and dizzying hook-ups.

After an intoxicating encounter with a mystery man, Sequin sets out on a personal odyssey, trying not to lose himself along the way. First-time director Samuel Van Grinsven draws on some cool sources of inspiration here, with a strong Gregg Araki influence in the film’s visual and narrative fluidity. It’s exciting to see an independent Australian film look and feel like this.

The Pack season 1 (20 November)

The Amazing Race but with doggos! That’s literally all I need to know in order to build an unhealthy amount of hype for The Pack, a new ‘documentary global adventure’ that tests the bond between 12 majestic dogs and their owners. Hosted by a dog called Lucy and her ski champion owner Lindsey Vonn, this feels like an especially quirky spin on the reality-competition format, with the winning duo winning $500,000 themselves and $250,000 for the animal charity of their choice.

I will sit and stay for The Pack, even though I worry that it might expose me to just how talentless my own dogs are. They probably can’t even travel around the world and win me $500,000 dollars, the lazy lil hogs.
