The Horror of Dolores Roach (July 7)

Horror studio Blumhouse has populated Amazon’s streaming service with plenty of creepy, low-budget features: let’s see how their venture into an episodic series turns out. Based on a successful narrative podcast, this spooky tale follows a recently released prisoner who turns to masseuse work under her stoner buddy’s empanada shop. Doesn’t sound particularly scary…until her newfound stability is threatened, and the streets soon run red with blood. And possibly salsa sauce.

Robots (July 7)

The high-concept behind this wacky sci-fi rom-com reminds me of philosopher Slavoj Žižek’s bizarre rant about “the perfect date”: a dystopian hypothetical meet-cute where humans let their, uh, sex toys do the sexin’, leaving our human minds and bodies free to actually connect. Anyways. Shailene Woodley and Jack Whitehall star as futuristic scam artists who send robotic replicas of themselves off on a date, and are stunned when the androids rebel against their programming by actually falling in love.

Good Omens: Season 2 (July 31)

Like a blessing from two of fantasy’s greatest gods, an unexpected second season of this David Tennant/Michael Sheen series has manifested. Originally Good Omens was only intended to be a limited series, so this next chapter, arriving practically four years after the first premiered, is a heavenly gift. Tennant and Sheen star as a priggish angel and a rock-n-roll demon in an urban fantasy yarn cooked up by Neil Gaiman and the late Terry Pratchett, with a memory-wiped archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) kicking off this latest series of spiritually confusing events.
