Thor: Ragnarok, from director Taika Waititi, isn’t out in Australian cinemas until October 26 (you can view session times here) but the reviews are starting to arrive.
The embargo on critics who attended early screenings has just been lifted, opening up an Asgardian floodgate of Thor-related opinions. So what are the critics saying?
Well, fans can probably breathe a sigh of relief, because the first reviews are generally pretty positive. Most reviews suggest the movie is very effective as a comedy.
Flicks critic Daniel Rutledge was hugely impressed; make sure you read his review. “This movie is just so much fun,” he wrote. “It’s a hilarious superhero romp and nigh impossible to watch without a grin on your face.
Wenlei Ma from news.com.au wrote one of the most enthusiastic, describing it as “an exhilarating, fresh take on the superhero movie, a smashingly good two hours of fun you won’t want to take back.”
Leigh Paatsch from the Herald Sun says: “It is definitely no classic, but an appreciably looser, livelier approach will reinvigorate those beginning to tire of the standard Marvel formula.”
Overseas, Peter Debruge from Variety reckons Thor: Ragnarok “is easily the best of the three Thor movies — or maybe I just think so because its screenwriters and I finally seem to agree on one thing: The Thor movies are preposterous.”
And Steve Rose from The Guardian: “Thor: Ragnarok is almost an admission that you can’t play this material straight…it’s so winningly, unpretentiously funny.”
