Australian box office report: Thor storms into cinemas with the year’s biggest opening week

Like a beefy Australian lightning bolt, Thor: Love and Thunder just struck the box office big time, quickly becoming 2022’s highest-earning opening day, weekend, and week with $25 million so far.

The other three movies in Australia’s box office top four have all had their time on the top, still taking in $4-10 million in the last week, but boy is it hard to beat Marvel these days. After only a few weeks blockbusters Jurassic World: Dominion and Lightyear each earned around $1.5 million, facing stiff competition from Tom Cruise, Minions, and Elvis above them.

Any Australian movies have been totally bumped from the box office top 10 (although Thor 4 is arguably a local production in some ways), and Everything Everywhere All At Once is still hanging in there with another $84k.

Here are the top 10 films at the Australian box office, July 7—July 14.

1. Thor: Love and Thunder (Walt Disney) $20,241,761
2. Minions: The Rise of Gru (Universal) $9,126,867
3. Elvis (Warner Bros) $4,003,293
4. Top Gun: Maverick (Paramount) $3,811,632
5. Jurassic World: Dominion (Universal) $1,590,743
6. Lightyear (Disney) $1,358,589
7. Shareek 2 (White Hill) $104,834
8. The Roundup (Signal Pictures) $93,443
9. Everything Everywhere All at Once (Roadshow) $84,251
10. My Sweet Monster (Rialto) $63,796
