Top Picks: TV
What We Do In The Shadows: Season 4 finale
If you’ve been meaning to watch this vampire sitcom but haven’t sunk your fangs in yet, I’d advise jumping right into this new season’s eighth episode, a hilarious standalone home renovation show where the Staten Island creeps quickly kill off one of a pair of reality TV “property brothers”. And then go right back to the beginning and get addicted. Because the show has the finest comedy ensemble on TV at the moment, and with Nandor the Relentless quickly getting sick of his overly agreeable bride Marwa, I reckon he and his familiar/slayer Guillermo could hook up anytime soon.
The Last Movie Stars
This historical miniseries is directed by Ethan Hawke and produced by Martin Scorsese: Hollywood royalty in their own right, ready to tell a swoon-worthy tale of golden age romance. It doesn’t hold back from depicting Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward’s at-times turbulent marriage, a decades-long partnership that stood out from the rest due to their genuine respect and besotted love for one another. After seeing a few clips of Newman lying with his head in Woodward’s lap, getting his hair quietly stroked in the midst of some bigwig event, I’ve already fallen in deep.
Supernatural: Boxset release
15 seasons is too damn much for even the most low-concept, breezy show, and Supernatural was not such a program, following two demon-hunting brothers across America in their dad’s Chevy Impala. The once-beloved show sure lost a lot of its magic as characters were constantly killed off, sent to hell/heaven, and returned to the earthly realm only to get killed off again. But for fans, having the whole sexy CGI-heavy saga at their clawed fingertips will be a gift nonetheless. Carry on, my wayward Winchester sons: there may not be much peace when you are done.
Top Picks: Movies
The Matrix trilogy and Resurrections
Pop a red pill and settle in for the ultimate simulation theory movie marathon: The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded, and The Matrix Revolutions arrive on BINGE on September 9, and 2021’s four-quel The Matrix Resurrections can be streamed from September 16. Perhaps it’s just the nutty optimism of the latest film getting to me, but I find a lot of value in those critically maligned second and third films. The fight scenes are consistently incredible, and the Wachowskis just have so much clear, earnest love for their characters, making Trinity and Neo’s romance soulful amidst all the confusing worldbuilding.
Scream (2022)
The whole “excruciatingly self-aware horror” thing has been done to death ever since Wes Craven laid out the final girl ground rules for us back in 1996. Where this “requel” excels, though, is in making Ghostface truly monstrous again: he’s absolutely merciless here, tormenting a new batch of Woodsboro blood bags and just coming across as a total jerk. The OG cast show up, tantalisingly displayed on the film’s art with the tagline, “the killer is on this poster”. Could Neve Campbell’s all-timer final girl Sidney finally have snapped? Or are Dewey (David Arquette) and Gale (Courteney Cox) feeling empty without a little knifeplay terror in their lives? For me at least, the reveal of who’s behind the mask was nicely unpredictable.
C’mon C’mon
All of Mike Mills’ films have taken a warmly humanistic, close look at parenting: at seeing your elderly dad blossom in Beginners, the many ways female figures can raise a good man in 20th Century Women, and now in this black-and-white tale of a vibrant uncle-nephew dynamic. Rory Doherty called it “the best movie about a podcast ever made” in his review for Flicks, and I don’t disagree, feeling a lot of the childlike lust for life that comes across in that title. Joaquin Phoenix seems like a wonderful, shaggy babysitter, seemingly learning more from his hyperactive charge than he could ever teach the kid.
