Finally, Australia is making a movie about go karts!

Remember those times when you whizzed around the Go Karts track? Remember how you absolutely, despite what your friends and family might say, smoked the competition? Remember how much fun it was?

Australian filmmakers are betting that the words “Go Karts” trigger some kind of nostalgic response, and that this response will translate into ticket sales. A new film called Go Karts has just been green lit by funding bodies Screenwest and Screen Australia.

It will be directed by Owen Trevor, one of the directors of TV’s Top Gear. The writer is Steve Worland, who penned the hugely successful 2009 family film Paper Planes, another Australian sports movie about an all-ages type recreation.

Go Karts will be produced by See Pictures, which recently completed Simon Baker’s directorial debut, the drama Breath. It will be distributed throughout Australia and New Zealand by Roadshow Films.

Here’s a description of the story, from Screen Australia: “Go Karts is an uplifting family film telling the story of a boy who must overcome tremendous odds and his own recklessness to achieve his dream of winning the Australian Go Kart Championship.”

Go Karts will commence production in the first half of this year.
