Magic Hour

Apple+ dramatic mystery series, inspired by the true story of 9-year-old journalist Hilde Lysiak. Directed by Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu. Hilde (Brooklynn Prince, The Florida Project) moves from the city to the small lakeside town her father (Jim Sturgess) grew up in. There, she digs into a cold case that everyone in town tried hard to bury.
Like so many child-prodigy narratives, Home Before Dark finds it most expedient to have Hilde act, think, and talk more or less like a miniature adult (albeit with a kid’s stringent sense of right and wrong). Even a child actor as good as Brooklynn Prince can seem stilted and smarmy when handed self-consciously elevated child-genius dialogue.
Full review“Home Before Dark” has a strong duo in Prince and Sturgess, who squeeze their every scene together for all the emotional juice it’s worth...
Full reviewAs anyone knows if they experienced The Florida Project with Prince as their guide, she’s a compulsively watchable actor. She plays the fanciful premise (“What if Veronica Mars, but tinier?”) with such utter conviction that Home Before Dark is appealing in spite of its flaws.
Full reviewBoasting excellent writing across its first five episodes, the series creates a sense of stakes that are greater, and even more enticing, than its two big whodunits.
