Paramount+ just launched, promising ‘premium content for the ones who expect more’

Way back in 1916, Adolph Zukor grouped together 22 of the brightest acting stars on his books (including Mary Pickford, Rudolph Valentino and Gloria Swanson) and represented them each with an actual star on the logo of his film studio: Paramount Pictures.

What would ol’ Adolph say, to see that more than a hundred years later, international audiences are now able to ‘stream’ the historical efforts of his studio, by paying $8.99 a month to watch across multiple screens and devices? His head would probably explode, but maybe after some explaining he’d feel mighty chuffed.

After months of fanfare, Paramount+ has finally launched for Australian subscribers, bringing together the best content from the Paramount film vaults, CBS and Channel 10 TV series, and titles from Nickelodeon, MTV and Comedy Central.

The new streaming service promises “a mountain of entertainment” for viewers willing to try out that seven day free trial, costing $8.99 a month or $89.99 per year from then on.

The sign-up buttons on the official Paramount+ website are now ready for Aussie streaming addicts to try out; whether you’re here to revisit Dexter, iCarly, Spongebob, and Rugrats, or to try out the all-new original titles, like black comedy series Two Weeks To Live or Marky Mark’s reincarnation sci-fi Infinite.

It all seems to live up to the promotional trailer below, which boasts that “this is not just another streaming service—this is unique stories, iconic stars, and a mountain of entertainment.”

To sweeten the deal for hesitant subscribers, Paramount+ is also home to A-League and W-League soccer games, giving fans the opportunity to watch live. Unlike with Stan’s optional add-on Stan Sport, this comes at no additional cost to the main tier of subscription, keeping things nice and streamlined.

Paramount+ looks to be absorbing entertainment—literally, as in it’s slurping up the best film and TV you’ve enjoyed elsewhere on network TV and other streaming platforms. We first reported on Paramount+ when it nabbed the Channel 10 dramedy Five Bedrooms, our first hint that this new streaming service (sorry, “not a streaming service”, whatever) might begin snapping up beloved titles to claim for its own library.
