Australian trailer and release date for monster mash Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

It’s time to return to the MonsterVerse! If you’re a fan of giant monkeys, giant lizards, and the subtle and closely observed interplay that occurs when the two cross paths, we’ve got some fantastic news for you. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is swinging into cinemas on March 14, 2024.

This is a direct sequel to 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, but note the change in wording—maybe they’re friends now? Perhaps, much like Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, a greater evil forces the titanic twosome to team up. The official synopsis supports this theory, saying that this latest entry into the franchise will be “…pitting the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence—and our own.”

Scary stuff, but luckily, we have some familiar faces on deck to hold our hands, with Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and Kaylee Hottle all reprising their roles from the last film, as well as director Adam Wingard resuming his duties behind the camera. Newcomers include Dan Stevens, who previously worked with Wingard on the criminally underseen but very good The Guest, Fala Chen, Rachel House, and Alex Ferns.

As for specific plot details? Sadly, we’re out of luck, but it’s safe to say we can expect a return to the Hollow Earth, and we’ll go out on a limb and say that at least two points a giant monster is going to beat the living hell out of another giant monster. Widespread property damage is almost certainly on the cards, a heroic sacrifice or two is not out of the question, and, as ever, the human characters will quickly fade from memory, while scenes of monkey-on-lizard violence will be etched into our brains forever. Which is exactly what we want from these flicks. Bring it.
