An optical illusion in Marriage Story puts Scarlett Johansson’s head on a tiny boy’s body

The main narrative of Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story concerns the soul-crushing breakdown of a marriage between theatre-makers Charlie and Nicole (Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson). Torn between New York and Los Angeles, the couple are forced to confront their shortcomings as parents and lovers, whilst being constantly reminded of the deep, real love that brought them together in the first place.

Within that story, though, there’s also some kind of secret subplot about Scarlett Johansson’s head being stuck on a tiny child’s body, with a headless figure carrying her around like Mad Max 3: Thunderdome’s Master and Blaster. What? Let me explain.

Baumbach’s Netflix film (see all new movies on Netflix) has been lauded for its sensitive depiction of romance in decay – it’s nominated for six Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture in the Drama Category. But observant Twitter users have picked out one weird flaw in the movie’s otherwise celebrated direction – a few weird seconds in which Johansson’s Nicole carries her sleeping son Henry.

After user Eliza Cossio pointed out the accidental optical illusion, plenty of commenters were quick to voice their agreement, saying that the trippy effect was un-seeable once you first notice it. If you notice it, that is.

Marriage Story is available on Netflix right now, and is actually pretty good, even if you try to ignore the cool headless ghost man.
