The Tourist
Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie star in this thriller, billed as "a web of intrigue, romance and danger" set against the backdrop of Paris and Venice. From the director of 2007 Oscar winner The Lives of Others.
During an impromptu trip to Europe to mend a broken heart, Frank (Depp) unexpectedly finds himself in a flirtatious encounter with Elise (Jolie), a woman who deliberately crosses his path. Frank pursues the potential romance but soon finds himself the pursued, as he and Elise are unwittingly thrust into a deadly game of cat and mouse...

Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's 'The Lives of Others' was a brilliant study in voyeurism and the human capacity for both cruelty and humanity... This is like its evil simpleton twin. It looks like a cheap TV movie - and the script and acting are worse. Depp is plain two-dimensional, his face and acting flabby - even the always sultry Angelina Jolie looks...
Beautiful setting Let down by acting
This movie had the right pace and ultimately the right intrigue to get you involved. But it lacked one major element, chemistry. Its too hard for johnny depp to be believe-ably inept - Poor angelina looked beautiful but wooden so no matter how beautiful it was to watch.. the pace was broken by two dolls pretending to be infatuated when in fact they needed...
Enjoyable, but not quite there...
Jolie is dressed exquisitely and looks stunning, and watching the film with my wife meant I appreciated this aspect more :) The setting in Venice is stunning, but the music score is a little eclectic. Shades of Hitchcock are here, with an 'out of water' everyman protagonist, meeting on a train, and the mystery of just what is going on... there are hints...
An ok DVD at home?
The background scenes of Venice and costumes were excellent but sadly that's not what a good movie is all about - especially given current prices of going to the movies! The story line was disappointing and Angeline Jolie seemed to be dropped into the cast to serve as 'eye candy' and to be a name to 'sell' the movie. Don't be in a rush to see this one.
Starpower isn't enough
The plot for the movie sounded derivative, but surely the two star actors would guarantee us something with lavish special effects, clever dialogue and snappy scenes? Unfortunately not. This is quite a botch-up job. The director and actors appear to have taken their pay and just trundled out very banal performances. No surprise for Von Donnersmarck perhaps...
