The Hunchback of Notre Dame

The Hunchback of Notre Dame

The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Disney Studios took Victor Hugo’s ultra-depressing novel and turned it into a colourful animated musical in this 1996 family-friendly adaptation. From the directors of the Oscar-winning Beauty and the Beast.

Quasimodo, a deformed man with a kind heart, is the bell ringer of Notre Dame in 15th century Paris. His reluctant caretaker Claude Frollo hides him in the belltower of the cathedral and away from the eye of the public. But when the Festival of Fools arrives in the township, Quasimodo cannot resist joining in. During the festivities, the pure-hearted bell ringer meets two people who would change his lonely life: Esmeralda, an unspeakably beautiful gypsy, and Phoebus, a handsome soldier.

The studio's ambitious adaptation of Victor Hugo's sprawling classic remains surprisingly faithful to the book's grim mood, if not its plot.

A solid, enjoyable, beautifully animated Disney movie, but one not quite out of the top drawer.
