To hear Rossellini deliver selfless words of love and encouragement in her rich, velvety contralto — is to witness the film’s secret weapon in action.
Full reviewA walking, talking mollusk uses the power of the internet to find his long-lost family in this A24 partially animated mockumentary. Directed by Dean Fleischer-Camp, expanding his 2010 short film co-written and featuring the voice of Jenny Slate (I Want You Back).
Marcel (Slate) is an adorable one-inch-tall shell who ekes out a colourful existence with his grandmother Connie (Isabella Rossellini) and their pet lint, Alan. Once part of a sprawling community of shells, they now live alone as the sole survivors of a mysterious tragedy. But when a documentary filmmaker discovers them amongst the clutter of his Airbnb, the short film he posts online brings Marcel millions of passionate fans, as well as unprecedented dangers and a new hope at finding his long-lost family. A beloved character gets his big-screen debut in this hilarious and heartwarming story about finding connection in the smallest corners.
LessAdorably cute, and unabashedly corny, Marcel is a life-lesson in a shell. Framed as a faux documentary, this is a surprisingly touching tale, ideal for all, big and small, old and young.

Full reviewAlthough its ending is too neat and abrupt, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On still convincingly proves that bigger sometimes is better.

Full reviewA cute, sweet, funny, imaginative tale dressed up like reality, an ode to survivors and the power of community.
Full reviewMarcel The Shell With His Shoes On is one of those movies that sneaks up and surprises you with how good it is.
Full review(It) suffers from an aimless plot that feels stretched too thin, but it... delivers enough heart, laughs, and innocence to forgive its shortcomings.
Full reviewAt times the plot... feels a bit hackneyed, but that can be forgiven for the depth it eventually adds to the mollusc’s personality.
