Hunky Dory

Hunky Dory

Hunky Dory

British feel-good drama from the producer of Billy Elliot. Set in the summer of 1976, Minnie Driver stars as an idealistic drama teacher who tries to put on the high school’s end-of-year show: a sci-fi rock opera version of The Tempest, one that "William Shakespeare and David Bowie would be proud of".

Basking in the nostalgic glow of the ‘70s with a busy ensemble of hormonal high schoolers, Marc Evans’ Hunky Dory seeks to be some sort of Welsh Glee-influenced answer to Dazed and Confused. Neither as richly evocative in atmosphere nor memorably sketched in character as Linklater’s note-perfect masterpiece, it’s pleasant, forgettably feelgood and unabashedly hackneyed, doing everything you expect it to – nothing more, nothing less.

Like a retro version of High School Musical with less charm.

In its goofy way, Hunky Dory is likable, and Robert Pugh is good as the gruff headmaster, drafted in to play Prospero.

Director Marc Evans clearly knows what he's doing with a camera, but he fails to push the boat out here.

Heartfelt interpretations of Seventies rock are only part of the appeal of nostalgia-drenched high school drama.

There's lo-fi charm in the musical numbers and heartfelt turns from the young cast but the story drifts along without offering much that we haven't seen before.
