Halston

Fashion documentarian Frédéric Tcheng investigates the cautionary rags-to-riches tale of America's first superstar designer.

"Fashion designer Halston combined talent, notoriety, and sheer fabulousness to become a legend. From humble beginnings in Des Moines, Iowa, his first brush with fame came when he designed Jackie Onassis's famous pink pillbox hat. Whether he was popularising hot pants, creating elegant but comfortable women's wear, launching a perfume line, travelling with a gaggle of models to China, or having hedonistic fun with Liza Minnelli at Studio 54, Halston built a reputation and an empire — and was responsible for many iconic moments in American fashion and culture in the '70s and '80s. Halston tells the story of a complicated man — in both his craft and his business decisions — from the mouths of those who knew the man best." (Sundance Film Festival)

When it reverts to conventional documentary storytelling... "Halston" is thrilling stuff for fashion nerds, as well as a poignant character study of a misfit ultimately undone by his excessive hunger to prove himself.

The pictures, footage, biography, news and gossip are the opposite of a Halston dress - unruly, busy, fussed over. But they come at you with an energy that feels substantial.

The archive clips suggest Halston is a role Richard E Grant was born to play: the designer had a long-limbed loucheness, grandiose affectations and put-on accent, along with a fierce perfectionism.

Ignore the film's foolish framing device with Tavi Gevinson playing fashion detective and a fascinating portrait emerges of Halston as a flawed icon whose designs captured an era and still take your breath away.

Unfortunately, just as Halston did in life, this documentary avoids delving deeply into the mysterious man.

Some dead weight in the framing flourishes, but still an entertaining, well-researched documentary.

A roller coaster of fabulousness and folly only marginally compromised by its excessive length and fussy structural gimmicks.
