Beautiful Lies

An anonymous love letter leads to a slew of misunderstandings in this French romantic-comedy starring Audrey Tautou (Amelie), from the director of Priceless.

Emilie (Tautou) puts her heart into running her busy hairdressing salon in the sunny South of France. Meanwhile, her mum Maddy (Nathalie Baye, Tell No One), has had her heart broken. When Emilie starts receiving anonymous love letters, she gets an idea: she decides to send them on to Maddy with the address changed, in an effort to put a skip back in her mother's step. The plan works and Maddy is touched by the confession. However when the author of the letter reveals himself, confusion, complications and dilemmas ensue as mother and daughter find themselves in a heated competition for the same man.

Reviews & comments

"Romance" is a French word and rightful so!

Witty, heartfelt, humorous and so much more fun compared with the American happy, happy pancake, pancake version of a romantic comedy.

Beautiful movie

Thanks Flicks for picking me to win these tickets! This is quite a beautiful movie, with beautiful people in a beautiful setting. All in french - with subtitles. This delightful film kept me captivated, sometimes laughing & sometimes crying, alot of times both! A lovely hair salon owner recieves an anonymous love letter oneday, at first she discards it...

When a mom and her daughter fall for the same guy, the result is plenty of ooh-la-las but few actual laughs in Gallic helmer Pierre Salvadori's tried-and-tested romantic comedy...

Salvadori generates few laughs from this convoluted tale, whose romcom trappings sit uneasily with its lonely, troubled characters.

Only Sami Bouajila, playing the bemused, overeducated handyman-in-the-middle, emerges with his dignity relatively intact.

It's easy to sneer at this kind of stuff, but it's delightful fluff. Tautou is doing nothing here that you have not seen before, but she does it so well.

Undemanding if occasionally uneven stuff.
