Best new movies and TV series on Stan: March 2023

Each month, lots of new films and TV shows are added to Stan‘s library. Critic Claire White surveys each month’s selections and picks for titles most worth watching. For the full list of everything arriving on the platform, scroll down.

Top Picks: TV

Dawn of the Dolphins (March 6)

I am a hard-core AFL girlie, so I have no interest in NRL. However, I do love a good sports documentary. Going behind the scenes and getting an inside look on how a team works, the inner sanctum of the coaching staff and life-or-death intensity of the games? It’s passion, it’s melodrama. Dawn of the Dolphins follows coach Wayne Bennet as he builds and prepares the Dolphins for their inaugural NRL season. Settle in for the epic highs and lows of elite sport!

Kardashians Billion Dollar Dynasty (March 8)

Even if you’ve never watched their reality TV show, you most likely have heard of the Kardashian family. This two-part documentary series explores how they built their billion-dollar dynasty on the premise of “being famous for being famous,” and challenges the—ahem—reality of some key events in their lives.

The series features talking heads by a number of players including Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt, a couple from reality show The Hills who ran so the Kardashian’s could walk. Doubtful it’s an official investigation but Kardashian sceptics and those interested in 21st century media culture would find themselves intrigued.

Lucky Hank (March 20)

Those post-Better Call Saul blues can’t last long: from the same executive producers as Breaking Bad and BCS, Bob Odenkirk stars as William Henry “Hank” Devereaux, a grumpy and rude professor who is the head of the English department at a small, fictional college. Whether his tirades in class are being recorded by students, being repeatedly called an asshole or fighting a goose, Hank is a man on the verge of a nervous breakdown. From the looks of the trailer, it doesn’t look like anyone is having a good time, which means watching will be a good time.

Top Picks: Movies + Specials

Promising Young Woman (March 2)

Candy-coloured and vengeful, Promising Young Woman caused quite a stir when it came out pre-pandemic. Although it won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, its win was divisive: as Carey Mulligan’s Cassie goes out to seek revenge on men who prey on vulnerable drunk women, is the film too on the nose, or a biting commentary of a violent misogynistic culture? You decide!

Stories We Tell (March 23)

With her latest film Women Talking currently nominated for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay at this year’s Academy Awards, now is the perfect time to revisit Sarah Polley’s excellent autobiographical film Stories We Tell. A beautiful examination of grief and distance, through a series of revealing interviews with members of her family Polley explores her complicated family history, as well as her unknowable mother. Interspersed with super-8 footage that recreates the past, what was already a thing of beauty becomes exceptional in the way Polley challenges memory, and whether we can ever really know the truth of each other.

Father of My Children (March 25)

As film and culture writer Michael Sun once wrote, “MIA HANSEN-LØVE HIVE RISE UP”. The acclaimed French film director’s sophomore film is a quietly touching drama about a family of a film producer who, in the wake of his suicide due to debt, endeavour to carry on his film productions. Hansen-Løve is known for taking inspiration from her own life, with this film inspired by French filmmaker Humbert Balsan who was an early mentor. Personal filmmaking that is sure to sink into your heart.
