Top picks

Don’t Make Me Go (July 15)

Get ready to cry real ugly, because John Cho is dying of a fatal brain tumour in this weepie road trip dramedy. Having promised his teen daughter Wally (Mia Isaac) driving lessons, the pair take off from California to New Orleans, bumping into familiar faces such as Jemaine Clement and Kaya Scodelario along the way.

Their final destination is his 20-year college reunion, and another, more secret reunion that Wally might object to: meeting the estranged mother that left the father-daughter family long ago. You won’t want the road trip to end, bringing back bittersweet memories of bickering with your own dad in his beat-up car.

Anything’s Possible (July 22)

“I hate when people say I’m brave”, trans teen Kelsa groans at her crush Khal. He has the perfect response: “it’s not that brave if you’re just being who you are.” Queer fashion icon Billy Porter directs this sweet and necessary new high school romance, with Broadway star Renee Elise Goldsberry bringing some glam as Kelsa’s loving mum.

It looks pretty dang typical of the whole boy-meets-girl teen genre, which is quietly revolutionary in its own way. But how can the romance between our young heroes flourish when he’s accused of “only dating her for the woke points”? If we know anything about Porter’s fairy godmother energy, it’s that there should be a happy ending—and some incredible Gen Z fashion moments.

Paper Girls (July 29)

I don’t remember too many of the particulars of Brian K. Vaugan’s graphic novel series Paper Girls: but what still resonates is its earthy, retro feel, another Stranger Things-esque tale about bike-riding teens getting caught up in interdimensional mayhem. Sent cavorting through time and space on Halloween night 1988, four paper girls will forge an eternal bond, even as their future selves present troubling visions of what will inevitably be.

The young cast playing Erin, Mac, KJ and Tiffany are all relatively unknown, but Ali Wong and Nate Corddry will show up as older figures helping—or hindering—the girls as they try to defeat the militant anti-time-travel faction the Old Watch.
