Ladies in Black and Sweet Country lead this year’s AACTA Awards nominations

Director Bruce Beresford’s romantic period drama Ladies in Black leads this year’s AACTA Awards, chalking up 11 nominations including Best Film, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Best Lead Actress.

The other films nominated for Best Film are Sweet Country (which received 10 nominations) Breath (nine), Boy Erased (seven) and Cargo (five).

Joel Edgerton and Simon Baker have made history, receiving nominations for direction and acting (in Boy Erased and Breath respectively). That is the first time this has happened in AACTA / AFI history.

This year five titles compete in a new category: Best Indie Film (for films budgeted under $2 million). They are Brothers’ Nest, Jirga, The Second, Strange Colours and West of Sunshine.

Actors nominated in the Best Lead Actor category are Ryan Corr (1%), Lucas Hedges (Boy Erased), Damian Hill (West of Sunshine), Daniel Monks (Pulse) and Hamilton Morris (Sweet Country).

Best Lead Actress has been filled out by Abbey Lee (1%), Rooney Mara (Mary Magdalene), Kate Mulvany (The Merger), Julia Ormond (Ladies in Black) and Angourie Rice (Ladies in Black).
