What is American Rust: Broken Justice about?
Adapted from Phillipp Meyer’s acclaimed 2009 novel of the same name by series creator and two-time Oscar nominee Dan Futterman (Capote, Foxcatcher), American Rust: Broken Justice sets its scene in the economically depressed town of Buell in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Whereas the book was a stream-of-conscious meditation on the downfall of the American middle class, the series distils that down into a plot more suitable for prestige TV, centring on the murder of a former police officer that shakes the tiny hamlet to its very foundations. Beaten down top cop Chief Del Harris is on the case, but he’s in a quandary: the main suspect, Billy Poe, is the teenage son of Del’s girlfriend, Grace.
We almost didn’t get season two after Showtime cancelled the series, but good ol’ Amazon snapped up the property, which picks up with now former Police Chief Del back in Pittsburgh as a detective, having left Buell following the dramatic events of last season (no spoilers, go watch). Of course, now he has to deal with all the reasons he left Pittsburgh in the first place. Back home, new Chief Steve Park (Rob Yang) is sniffing around, while poor Billy is struggling to recover from the brutal beating he took in jail (well, maybe one spoiler). And despite all the scandal and skulduggery uncovered in the previous season, it seems every character is still harbouring more dark secrets.
