For the first time female directors lead the Golden Globes nominations

The nominees for this year’s Golden Globes have been announced, and for the first time in the event’s 78 year history female filmmakers have taken the majority of nominations in the Best Director category.

The women nominated in this field are Regina King (for One Night in Miami), Chloe Zhao (for Nomadland) and Emerald Fennell (for Promising Young Woman). The other two Best Director nominees are David Fincher (for Mank) and Aaron Sorkin (for The Trial of the Chicago 7).

The Crown leads the TV nominations, scoring six, and Mank lead the film nominations, also scoring six. Netflix must be chuffed, securing the most noms of any company. The streaming giant took a massive 42 in total, for movies and shows such as The Crown, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, The Trial of the Chicago 7, The Queen’s Gambit and Mank.

Australians nominated include Cate Blanchett (for Mrs. America) and Nicole Kidman (for The Undoing). They will compete against each other in the best actress in a miniseries or television motion picture category.

Last week, Flicks contributor Sarah Ward wrote a piece arguing that 2020 was one of the greatest years ever for female filmmakers, imploring awards ceremonies to take notice. So far so good!

This year’s Golden Globes, which were delayed two months due to the coronavirus, will be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler and will be held on February 28. The ceremony will air in Australia at noon on Monday, March 1 on Foxtel, with other viewing options possibly being confirmed closer to the date.
