Our Flag Means Death (March 3)
Rhys Darby is dandy pirate captain Stede Bonnet in this madcap historical comedy that sees the fop give up his life of privilege for adventure on the high seas. The problem is that actual pirates, including Taika Waititi’s Blackbeard, are a much more unruly lot than Stede expects, so call it culture clash swashbuckling and prepare to be tickled. Kristian Nairn, Rory Kinnear, Ewen Bremner, Fred Armisen, Kristen Schaal, and Nick Kroll are also on board.
Shining Vale (March 7)
This spiky horror comedy sees Courteney Cox and Greg Kinnear as a dysfunctional married couple who move to the country to try and repair their relationship after she cheats on him, with their rebellious teenage kids in tow. But their metaphorical demons are no match for the literal ones infesting their new home, including a ghostly Mira Sorvino. This gives off a strong Santa Clarita Diet vibe, so fans of that much-missed show should definitely give this a spin.
Outlander: Season 6 (March 7)
The wildly popular time travel/historical romance continues as time-tossed World War II nurse Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and her husband, 18th century Scots warrior Jamie (Sam Heughan) carve out a life for themselves and their family in Fraser’s Ridge, North Carolina.
But the drums of war are beating and Claire knows the American Revolution is about to kick off—can she prevent calamity from befalling them? Rousing and romantic, Outlander continues to be top tier historical adventure.

Shiva Baby (March 4)
This dry, arch comedy follows Danielle (Rachel Sennott), an aimless young woman who attends a shiva—the Jewish period of mourning for a deceased loved one—with her parents, Joel (Fred Melamed) and Debbie (Polly Draper). There, she bumps into not only her successful ex-girlfriend Maya (Molly Gordon), but her sugar daddy Max (Danny Deferrari) and his wife Kim (Dianna Agron). As the various separate elements of her life collide, Danielle struggles to stay on top of things and is forced to confront her own malaise. Sharp, subtle, and hilarious.
Coal Miner’s Daughter (March 11)
The late and very great Michael Apted brings country star Loretta Lynn’s 1976 biography to the screen in this moving, triumphant musical biopic. Sissy Spacek is Lynn, who struggles to lift herself out of grinding rural poverty with only the power of her voice, going on to become one of the greatest country and western singers of all time. Tommy Lee Jones gives solid support as Lynn’s husband, with Beverly D’Angelo turning up as fellow country crooner Patsy Cline.
In The Heights (March 22)
Director Jon M. Chu brings Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría Hudes’ vibrant stage musical to brilliant life, charting two days in the life of the working class, largely Dominican neighbourhood of Washington Heights, New York City.
On the hottest day of summer word gets around that someone in the heights has bought a winning lottery ticket, forcing an array of characters, including bodega owner Usnavi (Anthony Ramos), to choose between their dreams of leaving the neighbourhood and their love for their community. A triumphant big screen musical, and one of the best movies of 2021.
