It’s the stuff dreams are made of. Violent, weird, raunchy dreams that take place in a galaxy far far away. It’s a combination so good none of us even considered it could possibly become a thing.
This week Disney announced that the creators of Game of Thrones, David Benioff and DB Weiss, have signed on to write and produce a new series of Star Wars films. It’s not April Fool’s Day. This is not a drill.
In a statement issued by the GoT gurus, Benioff and DB Weiss said: “We are honoured by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”
Kathleen Kennedy, the boss of Lucasfilm, described the pair as “some of the best storytellers working today.” And added: “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”
Details are scant, but Disney have made it clear that Benioff and Weiss’ Star Wars movies will not be traditional ‘saga’ films. They will exist separately to the films being developed by Rian Johnson, the writer/director of The Last Jedi.
This announcement begs the question: will there be dragons and incest in space? Will there be beheadings and humanoid ice creatures? Only time will tell.
This much is for sure. We’re excited. The merging of creative forces behind two of the biggest franchises in popular culture history is, whichever way you cut it, very big news.
