The Power of the Dog leads Oscar nominations, with Dune close behind

Check out all this year’s nominees, as well as some early thoughts on surprises and snubs.

The Power of the Dog leads this year’s Academy Awards race, with 12 nominations—surpassing the eight nominations (and memorable trifecta of wins) for The Piano in 1994 and close to the all-time record of 14. The Power of the Dog is up for Best Picture, with New Zealand’s Dame Jane Campion becoming the first woman to be nominated more than once for Best Director.

Other notable nominations for The Power of the Dog (which has already taken home numerous trophies this awards season), include acting nods for Benedict Cumberbatch, Jesse Plemons, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Kirsten Dunst; inclusion in the Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Cinematography categories; and a nomination for Jonny Greenwood’s score, among others.

In the Best Picture category, The Power of the Dog perhaps faces its toughest competition from Sir Kenneth Branagh’s semi-autobiographical Belfast, which also has good odds in the Best Director and both Supporting Actor categories.

After a polarising reaction on release, Adam McKay’s black comedy Don’t Look Up is perhaps a surprise inclusion for Best Picture, and also competes for Best Original Screenplay (against Belfast)—but the biggest surprise in the Best Picture field may be Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Drive My Car. The critical fave follows other recent non-Western films in smashing its way out of the Best International Feature ghetto as Japan’s first Best Picture nominee, and also picking up noms for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Perhaps the most surprising omission this year is Denis Villeneuve, who wasn’t nominated for Best Director—even though Dune picked up 10 nominations, including Best Picture, and a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay, recognising his superb work bringing Frank Herbert’s dense novel to the screen.

Elsewhere, actors Caitriona Balfe, Leonardo DiCaprio, Lady Gaga and Ruth Negga may be wondering where their good news is today—though perhaps none are as hard done by as The Worst Person in the World’s superb lead Renate Reinsve, whose performance is the best thing about a film that has picked up Oscar noms for Best Original Screenplay and Best International Feature.
