Over 30 Italian films are screening across the country with the 2015 Italian Film Fest. Highlights include the absolute gem of a classic, Bertolucci’s The Conformist, the nostalgic Latin Lover, Palme d’Or-nominated Mia Madre and “fairy tale for adults” Tale of Tales (pictured, from the director of Gomorrah).

Comes to Brisbane and Hobart in October.


ENVIRONMENTAL FILM FESTIVAL

Expanding from its Melbourne home, this year the not-for-profit Environmental Fest reaches Canberra and Tasmania as well, with a total 23 features exploring the environment and our interaction with it.

Includes Australian comedy-documentary Aim High in Creation (pictured), which features the filmmaking techniques of Kim Jong Il, The True Cost, which deals the social impacts of the fashion industry, and wild brumbies doc The Man from Coxs River.


THE FEMALE GAZE

BRISBANE | SEPT 5 – 26 | FULL PROGRAM & TICKETS

As part of the Brisbane Festival, Female Gaze is a selection of seven female-centric films playing at Palace Centro. Says curator Kiki Fung: “These female filmmakers or atypical female characters, reveal women’s thoughts and emotions while common perceptions and representations of women are challenged or subverted, and desire, gender politics and existential quests are narrated.”

Highlights include Sundance and Berlin-winning The Diary of a Teenage Girl (pictured), Charlotte Rampling in The Night Porter, and John Cassavete’s Opening Night starring Gena Rowlands.


QUEER SCREEN FILM FEST

The 12-film schedule celebrating LGBTI cinema includes May-September romance Freeheld with Julianne Moore and Ellen Page (pictured), Australian thriller Cut Snake and Lily Tomlin in Grandma. Also includes a short film programme.


KOREAN FILM FESTIVAL

The sixth Korean Film Festival with 20 films. Line-up highlights include action-noir Gangnam Blues, working-class drama Cart (pictured), and Madonna (direct from Cannes).

Three days of independent and experimental film from Australia and abroad, at the Factory Theatre in Marrickville, Sydney.


CZECH & SLOVAK FILM FESTIVAL

20 new and classic features plus a selection of short films screen in this 3rd collection from the Czech Republic and Slovakia. All screenings at the Centre for the Moving Image in Melbourne.
