Nicolas Cage goes next-level insane in the trailer for Mandy

The trailer for Nicolas Cage’s latest movie Mandy has landed, and it’s creating quite a stir. Among many strange sights it shows Cage, looking very worse for wear, participate in a chainsaw fight.

This is Cage’s face when he realises he is going to get into this duel of ‘saws.

And here’s a shot from the fight itself.

Why exactly does he participate in a chainsaw fight, you might ask?

That’s like asking why, in the recent horror movie Mom and Dad, Nic Cage attacked a pool table with a sledge hammer while singing Hokey Pokey. Or why he starred in a dodgy dystopian sci-fi film that played in virtual reality on three screens simultaneously. Lord Nicolas Cage works in mysterious ways.

Flicks wrote about both of these monolithic events in popular culture. We considered launching a sister site dedicated to reporting on all the crazy stuff Nic Cage gets up to, but we simply don’t think we could cover all of it.

Mandy takes place in 1983, in wilderness near the Shadow Mountains in California. Cage plays a character called Red Miller, who falls for a charming woman named Mandy Bloom (Andrea Riseborough).

A band of extreme cultists and supernatural creatures destroy Red’s life. He gets quite upset about this and vows revenge. The film was directed by Panos Cosmatos, who made the trippy science fiction horror movie Beyond the Black Rainbow.

Mandy might sound like a junky genre flick, but it’s getting a good response from critics. The film is currently sitting on a 97% Rotten Tomatoes approval rating, with many gushing reviews coming out.

Katherine McLaughlin from Sight and Sound, for example, called the film a “mind-melting genre orgy.” Dennis Harvey from Variety said Cage is in “full gonzo mode” and Bilge Ebiri from Village Voice said Mandy is “insanely violent and ethereally beautiful.”
