Letter from the Editor: We Want Your Advice

Ahoy there. This is an open letter to our wonderful readers and users, written because we want your help.

Fliks, now 10 years old in NZ and about one year old in Australia, is a small team working very hard to bring you what you need to know about what’s going on in cinemas. We are now starting to do the same for On Demand. We want to help you choose your movie, and let you know where to get it.

We have an idea for a new feature on Flicks, an extension of the above. We think it’s pretty good, and we think it will be really useful for the life cinematic.

But who better to help us hone our ideas than you? So, we’ll tell you about it and, if you would be so kind, you can tell us what you think.

Here’s our idea: Notifications and alerts based on your interests in films, people (cast, directors, other users) and genres.

On Flicks you will be able to click ‘follow’ buttons on, for example, the movie page for Interstellar. You might also follow actress Marion Cottilard, and follow Romantic-Comedies.

Because you follow those three things, you’d get an ‘alert’ by email letting you know that Interstellar has a new trailer; that a film starring Marion Cottilard, Two Days One Night, is out today in cinemas; that there are three new Romantic-Comedies out this week online.

You’d have a choice in your settings to get email alerts or not, and controls over their frequency. So your updates could all end up in one email, or several. If you don’t want emails at all, you would see these alerts when you visit the site.

Basically – this is a way of tracking the things you’re interested in, and not missing out when there is news about them or they become available.

So. What do you think? Do you like it? Would you use it?

Comment below, or we’re on Twitter email at ed@fliks.com.au.

Many thanks,
Steve Newall, Editor.
