Acclaimed award-winning director Hirokazu Kore-eda (Like Father, Like Son, Shoplifters) presents this series following two inseparable young friends, Sumire and Kiyo, who move to Kyoto in the hope of becoming maiko, or apprentice geisha. Soon realising she is not cut out for geisha life, Kiro pursues a different passion.

Based on the popular manga series Kiyo in Kyoto: From the Maiko House by Aiko Koyama, the series stars Nana Mori (Weathering With You) as Kiyo, and model-turned-actress Natsuki Deguchi as Sumire.
