The Prom

Meryl Streep, James Corden and Nicole Kidman star in Ryan Murphy's musical comedy about a troupe of self-obsessed - and down-and-out - musical theater stars trying to revive their careers by getting involved in the LGBTQ+ movement.

A two-time Tony Award winner (Streep) works with Barry Glickman (Corden) on a musical about Eleanour Roosevelt that fails miserably, landing them with the worst reviews of their career. Eager to redeem themselves, they decide to get behind a noble cause - and they find one in Emma Nolan (Jo Ellen Pellman), a high school senior barred from attending the prom with her girlfriend. So along with Broadway veteran chorus girl Angie Dickson (Nicole Kidman) and an out of luck actor (Andrew Rannells, The Intern), the team rushes to small-town Indiana to help out.

Suffers from excessive self-delight, chronic glee and a surfeit of joyishness, along with splotches of sentimentality.

Flirts at moments with being the most elaborate public service announcement ever created, but I was moved by the scale of the sentiment.

The relative levels of comedy and musicality ought to be subjects of debate.

The story unwinds with histrionics and homilies, jazz hands and twinkle toes, overly busy camerawork and hookless lung bursters.

A valentine to theater coupled with an overt message about LGBTQ acceptance and inclusion.

The jokes land, the cast is superb, the score is still charming, and fans of the show will have little to complain about.

Works hard to be a good time, and I hope it is for many who could use one.

Takes giant leaps (literally and metaphorically) in its story progression without earning it.
