Mothers and Daughters (2016)

All-star drama made up of interwoven stories about what it means to be a mum. Cast includes Christina Ricci, Susan Sarandon, Courteney Cox, Sharon Stone and Selmar Blair.

The stories are tied together via single gal Rigby Gray, a rock photographer who's riding a career high when an unlikely and unexpected pregnancy forces her to turn her lens inward. As Rigby comes to terms with what it takes to change her life forever, she discovers with fresh eyes her own relationship with her estranged mother. Through a series of photographs documenting motherhood in all its varieties, she considers what it means to be maternal at all.

Full of recognizable stars and heartfelt conversations. Unfortunately, it's largely devoid of the kind of character development that can give such conversations real impact.

The fractured nature of this multi-story ensemble means there is little chance of becoming completely engaged with any particular mother and daughter couple.

The sort of movie in which a pregnant single woman is informed by her obstetrician just before she's about to give birth that he's can't perform the procedure because he's in love with her, this drama is the second misfire in as many weeks focused on the theme of motherhood.
