DreamWorks (Madagascar, Shrek) 3D animated comedy. After super-villain Megamind (Will Ferrell) kills his good-guy nemesis, Metro Man (Brad Pitt), he becomes bored since there is no one left to fight. He creates a new foe, Titan (Jonah Hill), who, instead of using his powers for good, sets out to destroy the world, positioning Megamind to save the day for the first time in his life.

Flicks Review

NB: Our reviewer saw the 3D version of this film.... More

The super-villain is back in business. Hot on the heels of Despicable Me’s Gru comes the blue, bulbous-headed Megamind, wannabe tyrant of Metro City and arch-nemesis of the citizens’ beloved Metroman. Gru and Mega must be related – they’re both a plastic surgeon’s dream, they both think dastardly, and they’re big softies underneath it all.

All serves to highlight that Megamind, whilst a fun watch, is content to follow formula. It isn’t very unique (The Incredibles did superheroes and did it better), but it will play better to a younger, less discerning crowd. Despite a darker tone than one might expect, the humour is too mundane to appeal to adults (the song selections, in particular, are very unimaginative).

But the 3D animation is vibrant and well utilised, a couple of top comedians lend their voices (though Will Ferrell’s just not the same without his face), and the climatic battle is big and loud. Megamind is a moderately amusing experience, if not one of the year’s most memorable animated efforts.Hide

The idea of a Superman pastiche would make for a fun movie and appeal to adults too in the hands of PIXAR - whose MONSTERS INC, UP and WALL-E work on several levels. But this is typical DREAMWORKS fare - a neat idea (eg. Panda + Kung Fu = $$$) - given a flimsy script, a good voice cast and a cool trailer and... that's all folks! Will Ferrell is fun but limited by a slight script, too low on gags, and Bradley Pitt-Jolie is wasted.

All in all? Instantly forgettable. Fun while it lasts. Nice... More concept - but its potential is never fully realised.Hide

  • Like Monsters Vs. Aliens, a retro-stylised fantasy-satire that balances knowingness with affection, winning kids and olds over in the process. Wry, spry and very funny. Full Review

  • This latest DreamWorks toon, while not without its moments of wit and emotion, comes off as a derivative wisecracking machine rather than a feat of sustained imagination. Full Review
