EPISODE 1.1
Episode 1
Rookie cop Kurt Wallander stumbles into a hate crime in
... More his own neighborhood. As he hunts the killer, the incident fuels anti-immigration anger.LessAdam Pålsson (Avenue 5) is popular fictional police inspector Kurt Wallander in his origin series. The first season follows the rookie cop as he's fast-tracked to becoming a detective with a hate crime case stirring civil unrest.
With an underwhelming leading man, a muddled identity, and a cliched story, it’s ultimately insubstantial.
Full reviewAs of the end of the first episode, Wallander is the least interesting character, which is not a good sign...
Full reviewThe series has sparks of brilliance... (but) it ends up being a little predictable at times...
Full reviewYet no matter how dark the show is, or how stylishly shot, it is impossible to shake the feeling that Wallander's name here is just branding, fake ID. Impersonating a police officer, still a crime.
Full reviewAll of this could be forgiven if Young Wallander worked as a drama in its own right, but it's so inept that one can only assume these decisions form some sort of elaborate marketing strategy by Netflix.
Full reviewThe script treats the viewers like idiots, signposting every plot point and rolling out exposition in inert question-and-answer scenes. Someone literally says “the plot thickens” at one point. They’re not being ironic. Even the incidental dialogue, of which there is copious amounts, is stiff as a board.
Full reviewYoung Wallander ticks off its lead’s familiar attributes in checklist fashion, rarely pausing to offer more developed hints at psychological cause and correlation.
