EPISODE 1.1
Pilot
Kate Kane returns to Gotham when a gang targets her
... More father and her ex-girlfriend Sophie Moore.LessRuby Rose (John Wick: Chapter 2) is Kate Kane, Batwoman and defender of Gotham City, in this superhero origin show created by Caroline Dries (writer on Smallville and The Vampire Diaries). Co-stars Camrus Johnson (The Sun is Also a Star), Rachel Skarsten (Fifty Shades of Grey) and Meagan Tandy (Teen Wolf).
The facts of who Kate is immediately make her Batwoman origin story different and intriguing. Rose, a once controversial choice for the role, does her best to reveal the flickers of pain underneath Kate's steadfast stoicism.
Full reviewSufficiently well executed, with touches of quiet wit, but tinny and lacking in personality or excitement overall. It's a superheroics delivery system, most notable for its efficiency.
Full reviewBatwoman really sings when it's building the adversarial relationship between Kate and Alice, an opposite-sides-of-the-coin situation with similar vibes to Batman and the Joker.
Full reviewBatwoman is sharp and fun, full of mythology and unexpectedly easy to explore.
Full reviewIt's easy enough to watch that I'll stick around to see if it blossoms into something more.
Full reviewIt's a textureless, bland, hollow performance that mutes the character's potential to evolve into something more intriguing.
Full reviewMaybe when things improve a bit, or we get used to a new normal, it will be possible to care about the fact that Batwoman's plot is ridiculously slight, that her character is woefully underdeveloped and overtly presented as the real Batman's stand-in.
Full reviewBatwoman's second episode doesn't do much to fix the issues that emerged in the pilot, but its willingness to throw caution to the wind with plot feels in line with the other Arrowverse shows. I'm still not hooked, but I'll stick around for more.
Full reviewBatwoman: Season 1 is available to stream in Australia now on Google Play and Apple TV and Foxtel and Binge.
