Trailer and release date for Stillwater, Matt Damon’s gritty crime thriller

Matt Damon is goateed-up and ready to rescue his daughter in the trailer for Stillwater, a dad-tastic new crime thriller arriving in cinemas on July 29.

This dramatic family story is directed and written by Tom McCarthy, the filmmaker behind Best Picture winner Spotlight, and you can check out the rousing trailer just below.

Unlike Liam Neeson rampaging through Europe to save his trafficked offspring, Damon’s character Bill faces a troublesome moral dilemma: the possibility that his estranged daughter murdered her girlfriend, and that there may be no further legal avenues he can take to get her out of prison in Marseilles.

Stranded in a foreign land but refusing to take no for an answer, Bill enlists the help of a French woman (Camille Cottin), who criticises his outsider attitude by telling him “You sound very American right now!” Damon’s reply of “Good! I am!” tells us everything we need to know about the gruff character, who won’t let a little thing like language barriers or a murder conviction get between him and his kin.

Stillwater will be the final co-production of Amblin and Participant, a production company with a distinct focus on human rights storytelling that has been responsible for Green Book, An Inconvenient Truth, Judas and the Black Messiah, and McCarthy’s clergy abuse drama Spotlight.

On July 29, Stillwater arrives in cinemas around Australia, a great outing for your dad if you feel like he might identify with Damon’s oil-rig roughneck protagonist. Or just the enduring struggle to get your kid out of trouble no matter how guilty they might be.
