The 2012 Academy Award Nominations Announced!

Here they are, the 2012 Oscar nominations – including Flight of the Conchord Bret McKenzie (for his genius Muppet song) and big scores for Scorsese’s Hugo, silent movie The Artist, Bridesmaids, Moneyball and War Horse. FULL LIST BELOW.

If we’re playing the numbers game, leading is Hugo with 12 noms, followed by The Artist with 11 – two films that are love letters to a golden era of movies. Third is a tie, Moneyball and War Horse with 6.

In the ‘brilliant’ category: McKenzie is nominated for ‘Man or Muppet’ from The Muppets (we’d like a performance at the awards with a Rhymenosaurus encore). Comedy Bridesmaids gets 2 noms – for Best Original Screenplay and Supporting Actress (Melissa McCarthy). Plus Jonah Hill gets a nod for Moneyball, Best Supporting Actor.

In the ‘curious’ category: David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo gets 5 nominations – but not for Best Film or Best Director. Drive and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy – both with a bunch of BAFTA noms – has been generally snubbed. Pixar’s Cars 2 and Spielberg’s Tintin didn’t make the cut for Best Animated. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close – with luke warm reviews at best – comes from nowhere to nab 2 noms, including Best Picture.

The winners will be announced in Los Angeles on February 26.
