The school holidays roll around with bewildering speed, luckily we’re on hand to help with a few simple solutions to entertain the kids over the coming weeks. There’s plenty for kids of all ages to check out in cinemas – maybe even something you’ll like more than they will! Read on to see what’ll appeal to everyone from the youngest kids to the simply young at heart.

THE BOXTROLLS
Stop-motion animation company Laika Entertainment follow-up their previous features ParaNorman and Coraline with this down-in-the-gutter tale about an orphan boy raised by a group of cave-dwelling, trash-collecting, box-wearing creatures who adopt the boy into their family. Mixing the peculiarly crude with the unusually cute, this is one animated family adventure we’ve had our eyes on for well over a year.

PLANES: FIRE & RESCUE
Originally planned as a straight-to-DVD spinoff of Pixar’s Cars, Disney’s Planes was a surprise cinema hit in 2013, winning over the young ones with its high-flying tale of Dusty the crop-dusting plane. This year, Dusty moves on from the air-racing scene to help out those in need by becoming part of an air attack team responsible for putting out raging wildfires.

STEP UP 5: ALL IN
Moving on from its flashmob-inspired predecessor, this fifth edition in the ludicrously popular Step Up dance franchise takes place in Las Vegas. Pairing Ryan Guzman (from Step Up 4: Miami Heat) and Briana Evigan (Step Up 2: The Streets), Step Up 5: All In returns to a dance tournament format to showcase over-the-top performances from a cast of characters from throughout the series.

THE HOUSE OF MAGIC
Kindy kids may get a kick out of this 3D animated tale of an abandoned cat who seeks shelter in the large, whimsical house of an elderly magician. But when the kindly old fellow is sent to hospital, it is up to the feline and his new pals to defend the house from a smarmy real estate agent.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES
Everyone’s got a favourite turtle, thanks to the many times they’ve been enjoyed thanks to TV series, feature films, comics and more. Bringing fans of all ages and eras together in cinemas, the latest incarnation of the TMNT gang sees them brought to life by the wizards at Industrial Light & Magic (Star Wars) and mega-producer Michael Bay. Megan Fox and Will Arnett provide some human distraction from the film’s CGI creatures, but kids will only have eyes for the heroes in a half shell.
