Netflix is releasing Fear Street, an experimental horror trilogy from the mind of R.L. Stine

Netflix is bringing us three times the terror this July with an experimental trio of horror films.

Over three weeks, a new Fear Street flick will be released each Friday, taking a recurring cast of victims and villains into the past of one cursed town to show its history of bloody supernatural horror.

Based on the best-selling series by Goosebumps creator R.L. Stine, the Fear Street trilogy kicks off on July 2 with Part One, set in 1994. Expect some Scream-inspired teen carnage, as the young inhabitants of Shadyside, Ohio try to stop a killing spree with historical implications.

Part Two, set in 1978, seems to be more based on Friday The 13th-esque summer slashers, with kids and counsellors at Camp Nightwing facing a horrifying mystery. And Part Three takes us even further into the past with a story of witch hunts and perhaps the revelation of Shadyside’s enduring curse, set in 1666.

All three films were shot over the same scary summer, with a rotating cast of the same performers acting as new characters in each film: some of the stars include Maya Hawke, Gillian Jacobs, Sadie Sink and Kiana Madeira as a character named ‘Deena’ who mysteriously appears in all three instalments. Hmm.

Tune in on July 2, July 9, and July 16 to check out each time-skipping horror movie event in this new trilogy.

Even if you’re a fan of the books from the nineties, you’re not prepared for Netflix‘s cinematic adaptation: as author R.L. Stine promises, “the book series is rated PG. But the movies are rated R.”
