Top picks

Amazon Original Australian Comedy Specials (May 1-8, two specials released weekly)

Unique comedy talent is one of Australia’s best exports, and I can’t wait for an international audience to meet some of our country’s hottest acts via Amazon Prime’s roster of stand-up specials. At a time when we’re all yearning for a live experience more than ever, Lano and Woodley’s gonzo narrative special Fly or Anne Edmond’s gut-busting What’s Wrong With You? might be able to bring the good vibes of a comedy festival into your living room.

Celia Pacquoala, Zoë Coombs-Marr, Alice Fraser, Tommy Little, Judith Lucy and Dilruk Jayasinha already have comedy specials available now on Amazon Prime, and on May 1 and 8 they’ll be joined by another four big names: Lano and Woodley, Anne Edmonds, Tom Walker and Tom Gleeson.

Homecoming season 2 (May 22)

The first season of Homecoming gave us Julia Roberts as a social worker at a mysterious treatment facility for traumatised soldiers, and the second season appears to be just as compelling and star-studded. This time, singer and actress Janelle Monáe steps into the lead role. Her character wakes up in a boat in the middle of a lake, with no memory of how she got there. Will her fate be inextricably tied to the sinister machinations of the Geist Group from season one? Yeah, probably. Monáe is joined by Chris Cooper, Joan Cusack, Stephan James and Hong Chau in 10 episodes of dark psychological thrills.

Midsommar (May 6)

The ultimate bad break-up movie, Midsommar follows an American couple who travel to rural Sweden for the anthropological bro vacation from hell. It was one of 2019’s most inventive and disturbing horror movies, with gorgeous National Geographic visuals spiked with director Ari Aster’s trademark nightmarishness. Oscar-nominee Florence Pugh’s cry-face is instantly iconic, and now you can relive the terror from your very own home (whether you think that’s a good idea or not is up to you). Just…maybe don’t watch it with your quarantine boyfriend or girlfriend if things are kind of on the rocks?
